Yes, it's completely normal! The light residue comes from the natural diatomaceous earth used to make the mat. Simply wipe it with a damp cloth before use. If needed, you can also rinse it under water following the cleaning steps. Minor variations, such as small white dots, are natural and do not affect the mat’s quality or performance.

How do I clean my Stone Dish Mat?

Wipe the mat weekly with a vinegar-water mixture and let it air dry to keep it clean and hygienic. For stains, scrub under running water with a sponge and non-coloured dishwashing liquid, then rinse well. For deeper stains, a small amount of hydrogen peroxide may help. Only if the stain remains, lightly sand the area using the included sanding tool.

Very useful, highly recommended

I love these diatomaceous pads they sell these days. Excellent for outside the shower, I have one for under the soap dispensers at the kitchen sink (no more goopy mess), and this one I placed under the dish drying rack where it works perfectly to absorb any stray drops or splashes of water. If you haven't seen one in action, it's basically a super-absorbent material that is dry to the touch even if your fingers are wet and is great for keeping moisture from pooling where it doesn't belong.

I'm very happy with this stone dish drying mat. First of all, it looks very attractive on my countertop, much better than my old fabric drying mat. There is no odour, and it's low maintenance – as long as you're careful not to stain it with soap, it will keep looking fantastic. And it is incredibly absorbent! No matter how many wet dishes I put on it, it absorbs the water and dries within seconds. It's fun to watch, and it makes doing the dishes a bit less of a chore to manage. Highly recommended.

Low-Maintenance

I got this drying mat to replace my old fabric and foam ones, and it’s been a great upgrade. Since it’s made of diatomite, water disappears almost instantly, keeping the area dry. I already use diatomite shower mats, so it was a nobrainer for me.It's important to mention, be sure to rinse it before your first use. There’s a thin layer of diatomite dust that can transfer onto wet dishes, but a quick rinse takes care of that. Once in use, it works exactly as expected, with water from the dish rack vanishing in under a minute.At just under $40, it might seem pricey for a drying mat, but considering it will probably last for years with almost no maintenance, I’d say it’s a worthwhile investment.
